2. Skim any heavy dross from the surface of the bath.

3. Calculate the required amount of zirconium to be added and remove the appropriate number of Zy-Gem™ sleeves from the box (there is a fixed and guaranteed quantity of zirconium in each compact and sleeve).

4. Add the sleeves directly to the skimmed bath toward the center of the furnace and away from the furnace wall. There is no need to preheat the Zy-Gem (preheating risks loss of Zr to oxidation).

5. Allow 5 to 7 minutes after addition for the compacts to heat to bath temperature (the initial dissolution reaction will proceed rapidly at this temperature).

6. Mechanically stir the bath for 5 to 7 minutes making sure to “rake” the bottom of the

furnace in order to disperse the reaction products and facilitate final dissolution.

7. The zirconium will fully dissolve within 15 minutes after addition.
